Understanding Your NDIS Capital Supports Budget: What You Need to Know

NDIS Capital Supports

What is the NDIS Capital Supports Budget?

The Capital Supports budget is part of your NDIS plan and is designed to fund higher-cost, long-term supports that improve your independence and daily living. Unlike your Core Supports budget or Capacity Building Supports, this funding is strictly allocated and cannot be used for other purposes.

This budget generally covers one-off purchases, such as assistive technology, equipment, and home or vehicle modifications, as well as Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA).

The Two Key Categories of Capital Supports

Your Capital Supports budget is divided into two categories:

In Your PlanIn myplace PortalWhat It Covers
Assistive TechnologyAssistive TechnologyEquipment for mobility, communication, personal care, or recreational inclusion. This may include items such as wheelchairs, hearing aids, or vehicle modifications.
Home ModificationsHome ModificationsStructural changes to make your home safer and more accessible. Examples include installing a handrail in the bathroom, ramps, or Specialist Disability Accommodation for participants with higher support needs.

Why Capital Supports Matter

Capital Supports are critical because they often represent life-changing investments. The right equipment or home modification can:

  • Increase your independence

  • Improve safety and accessibility

  • Support long-term health and wellbeing

  • Enhance community participation

Unlike other budgets, these purchases typically involve NDIS approval and supporting evidence from specialists or allied health professionals.

Making the Most of Your Capital Supports Budget

To get the best outcomes from your plan:

  1. Work with your Support Coordinator or Plan Manager – They can guide you through the approval and funding process.

  2. Provide supporting evidence – Reports from allied health professionals may be required to justify the purchase.

  3. Plan ahead – Since these are higher-cost supports, applications can take time.

  4. Check NDIS guidelines – Learn more on the official NDIS Capital Supports page.
